To maintain the monopoly in export of sea foods and products, India has to develop a systematic planning in this stream. The Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) in Mumbai, a deemed university is one of the leading centers of training in this field.

There are various departments such as aqua culture, fish nutrition, fisheries technology, aquatic environment, fish processing technology and fish genetics. CIFE is a very large institution with zonal centers in Saltlake(Kolkata), Chinhutt(UP), Pavarkheda(Madhya Pradesh),Rohtak(Haryana) and Kakkinadai (Andhra Pradesh).

There are various study programmes in this institution. Masters Programme in Fisheries Science(MFSC) is offered for 2 years(4 semesters) .MFSC has some specializations like Fisheries Resource Management (offered in Mumbai), Inland Acquaculture (Mumbi), Mariculture(CMFRI, Kochi), Freshwater Acquaculture(CIFA, Bhubaneswar), Post Gravest Technology(CIFI , Kochi).

The course is open to candidates between the ages 20 to 25 years and they should have possessed BSc zoology or BFSc(recognized with at least 60% marks or equivalent OGPA. Admission is through an All India Agriculture Post Graduate combined entrance test conducted by ICAR. Forms and prospectus are available at the Vellanikkara office of Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur, for Rs.510/- directly. Applications will be received upto May 10, 2004.

In each specialization only 5 seats are available. Selected students will get a stipend of Rs.4400/- per month. First semester must be completed in Mumbai for all the courses.
Doctoral programmes: 3 years(6 semesters)

The courses offered are Fisheries Resources Management (Mumbai)& Mariculture (CMFRI-Kochi).Those who have scored a minimum of 60% marks in the Masters degree in the concerned subject can apply. Admission can be made through a special entrance test conducted by CIFE.

PG Diploma programme in Inland Fisheries Administration and Management is also offered by CIFE,Kolkata. Basic qualification is BSc (zoology) or BFSC and two years experience
PG Diploma in Marine Fisheries is conducted by CIFE, Mumbai. The candidates must have atleast 60 % marks in BSc (Zoology/Industrial Fisheries/related subjects) or BSFc.

Research programmes in Fish Breeding, Rearing of Ornamental Fish, cultivation of edible seaweeds and preparation of food products, Fish pathology & immunology, fish nutrition, Biotechnology, Bioactive & Bio dynamic substances from the sea, Aquatic environment,Fish Genetics and judicicious management of aquatic living resources.

CMFRI and CIFT of Cochin and CIFA Bhubaneswar are recognized as the centers for PG courses/research.
