The
Calcutta medical research Institute (CMR I)has introduced
a one-year diploma course in emergency and disaster nursing,
to provide specialised nursing care to victims of natural
disasters such as tsunami.
The
course which was inaugurated by the West Bengal Health minister
will offer one year theoretical and clinical training to registered
nurses on attending disaster victims at CMRI a private Medicare
centre.
Speaking
on the occasion, the chief operating officer of the CMRI major
Amit De said the one year course recognised by the Indian
Nursing Council and West Bengal Nursing council, would enable
nurses to provide prompt quality care in emergency and disaster
situations, supervise patient care in pre hospital settings
and conduct clinical teaching and carry out brief research
project in clinical area.
The
emerging trauma and disaster events are adding significant
strain to an individual's life as well as to the social system.
Hence the urgent need for nurses with specialised knowledge
skills and attitude in providing immediate holistic and individualised
nursing care to emergency patients, he said.
Major
De said that the course content included foundation courses
in psychology, sociology and pharmacology in addition to specialised
knowledge.
The
course would accommodate 20 registered nurses in each batch
he added.
