ARMED FORCES MEDICAL COLLEGE at Pune is
the only college providing free medical education for meritorious
students in the country. After graduation, a job is assured.
This college is managed by the Defense Ministry, Government
of India and offers the MBBS and B.Sc Nursing degrees. A total
of 130 students (105 students and 25 girls) are selected to
the MBBS course every year and it is mandatory for those admitted
to serve as Commissioned Officers in the Armed Forces Medical
Services on graduation.
The
type of commission will depend upon the vacancies available
and merit-cum-option during the final MBBS examination. The
Government will provide free accommodation and rations second-class
railway fare from college to home and back during vacations.
Also a book subsidy of rs.8000 during entire training period,
apart from other allowances, is also provided.
The
method of selection is through a written test, interview and
medical examination on all India basis. Only unmarried students
are eligible. Marriage during course is not permitted. The
college is fully residential both for boys and girls.
Applicants
should have passed Plus two or equivalent examination as a
regular student in the first attempt with English, physics,
Chemistry and Biology as the subjects securing not less than
60 per cent aggregate marks in the three Science subjects
and not less than 50 per cent marks in English. They must
have also passed Mathematics at least of the matriculation
level. The age limit is 17-22 years.
A
B.Sc. graduate who has studied at least two of these subjects
-Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany or Zoology)-and also
has passed these as well as the Plus Two or equivalent examination
with the same subjects and percentage of marks is eligible
for admission.
Usually
the AFMC MBBS entrance notification appears during December/January
and the entrance test is conducted during April/May.
In
Kerala, Kochi is the likely test center .The entrance test
will cover Biology, Physics, Intelligence, Reasoning and English
language comprehension.
The
AFMC, Pune also conducts B.Sc.Nursing classes. The duration
is four years and the number of seats is 40. Selected students
shall execute an agreement/bond to serve in the Military Nursing
Service for five years.
On
successful completion of the training, the candidate will
be granted commission in the Military Nursing Service. During
training, the students will be provided with free rations,
accommodation, uniform allowance and a monthly stipend.
In
the event of withdrawal from the course/termination of training
or refusal to accept Commission/ job, the entire cost of training
should be refunded.
Only
unmarried women/divorcee/legally separated or widows without
encumbrances are eligible for admission to B.Sc.Nursing.Applicants
should have passed Senior Secondary/Plus Two/equivalent examination
with Physics, Chemistry, Biology with minimum 50 per cent
aggregate marks as a regular student in the first attempt.
Selection
is through an all-India entrance test, interview and medical
test.
In
Kerala, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are the likely test centers.
Admission notification can be expected during December. The
entrance test will be held during February/March. The objective
type entrance test of 90 minutes duration covers English,
Biology, and General Intelligence.
